Promotion Episode: Super Serious 616 (Strange Tales #89) -- October 1961

What is this all about?

  • Super Serious 616 is a podcast that asks, “What would it be like to live through the introduction to the Marvel Universe as it was happening?”

  • The show begins with “Episode One” in November 1961, with the introduction of the Fantastic Four.

  • This is the “promotion spot” for that show. It was recorded in October 1961, before the Fantastic Four reveal themselves to the world (But there have still been some weird things going on in this world that is otherwise a lot like our own).

  • We will drop a few episodes all at once next week, and then move into a 3x/week regular cadence. Until then, enjoy this teaser…

In This Issue:

Strange Tales (1951) #89 | Comic Issues | Marvel
  • Fin Fang Foom, an ancient dragon sealed away for centuries, was released in China.

  • After being taunted by the man who released him, the dragon goes on a rampage that causes havoc on Chinese forces attempting to invade (what appears to be) Taiwan.

  • By the end of the issue Fin Fang Foom is re-sealed in his tomb.

Assumed before the next issue:

  • In Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), it is revealed that the Mole Man has been causing atomic power plants around the world to sink into the ground. It is suggested these attacks have been going on for some time. We assume these events have taken place before the recording of this episode.

This Episode takes place:

After the dragon and Mole Man attacks, but before any thing else from Fantastic Four #1.
